Description

A Finely Detailed Aztec Figure
Mexico, c. 1200-1500 AD

Carved from dense gray volcanic stone, the figure is shown seated upright with crossed legs and hands resting on the knees, the male genitals exposed. The head projects forward, the facial features fixed in a trance-like expression, with closed eyes and a slightly open mouth. He wears a large feathered crown secured by a band tied at the back, with an ornament at the front suggestive of a rattlesnake rattle. Long hair falls over the back and shoulders and is further adorned with ribbon ties. The ears are fitted with large spools, short feathers, and hooked ornaments.

This figure is best understood as an image of rank, authority, and sacred presence-not a casual portrait, but a figure made to embody elite status within ritual or ceremonial life. The crossed-legged pose, exposed male sex, elaborate headdress, ear ornaments, and controlled trance-like expression all point to a person of importance, probably a ruler, priestly official, or impersonator of divine power. Figures of this kind may have served as temple images, architectural ornaments, or ceremonial sculptures placed in spaces where political and sacred authority were inseparable. In good condition; proper left arm chipped, broken, and repaired.
