A Fine Jade Pendant...
Description
A Fine Jade PendantCosta Rica, c. 200-700 AD
A long tubular pendant carved from mottled dark green jade with a high polish, drilled lengthwise and with a supplemental perforation beneath a crouching jaguar at the center. One end terminates in a raised bird head, the hooked beak suggesting a harpy eagle, while the other is encircled by a band of rounded bosses. The composition balances linear form with sculptural detail. A well-executed example of Costa Rican jade carving, combining mythological avian and feline imagery. In excellent condition.
Provenance:
The Vilcek Foundation
Length: 4 inches
Estimate: $3,000 - $5,000.
