Description

A Diquís Standing Figure
Costa Rica, c. 800–1500 AD

Carved from light tan volcanic stone, the figure stands frontally with elongated oval openings separating the arms from the torso and a narrow opening between the legs. The body is compact and columnar, with tapering legs ending in grooved, peg-like feet that remain joined at the base. A broad belt or short skirt encircles the waist, decorated at the front with an arched motif and vertical divisions at the sides. The chest is marked by low relief circular breasts and a central navel, while the arms are covered with repeated transverse raised bands, possibly indicating scarification, body ornament, or arm coverings. The large head dominates, with rectangular eyes and nose in low relief and an exceptionally wide grinning mouth exposing a full row of teeth. The expression is forceful and memorable. A strong example of Diquís figural carving, notable for its graphic clarity and imposing frontal presence. In very good condition; weathered surface from exposure.
