Description

A Diquís Peg-Base Figure
Costa Rica, c. AD 800–1522

Carved from volcanic stone, the figure stands on an inverted conical peg base and holds a severed head before the body, presenting it directly to the viewer. The face is exaggerated and forceful, with a broad mouth, parted lips showing teeth, and a long tongue descending over the chin. Large ears frame the head, while a belt with a snake-head element encircles the waist and bands mark the knees. Grooves indicate the toes. Peg-base figures are characteristic of the Diquís sculptural tradition of southern Costa Rica, where such works are understood as images of power, warfare, and ritual display rather than ordinary portraiture. The peg itself was likely intended for upright installation in the ground or in a prepared socket. A compelling and highly charged example, joining trophy-head imagery with the formal severity of Diquís stone carving. Mounted to a painted wood base. In very good, weathered condition, with stains and erosion from exposure.

Provenance:
The Vilcek Foundation

Height: 26 inches

Estimate: $15,000 - $25,000.
