A Chontal Head Pendant with "Buds"...
Description
A Chontal Head Pendant with "Buds"Mexico, c. 500-100 BC
A carved head pendant with large eye sockets drilled for inlay, the features defined by strong diagonal planes forming the nose and cheek areas and pronounced raised brows. Two circular cup-like projections rise from the crown-an unusual but documented feature, also seen on related figures from Zacatecas of the same period. The piece is drilled for suspension, though the perforations are now compacted with mineral deposits. A distinctive variant within the Chontal sculptural tradition. In fair condition; erosion to the chin, with mineral deposits on the reverse.
Provenance:
The Vilcek Foundation
Height: 2 ¾ inches
Estimate: $1,200 - $1,800.
