Description

A Chavín Stone Bowl
Peru, Early Horizon, c. 900–200 BC

Carved from dark beige hardstone, this shallow bowl is worked on the convex exterior with a densely organized supernatural being surrounded by serpent forms. The figure is shown in profile, striding with claw-like feet and hands appearing to hold a thick, multi-strand staff. From and around him emerge numerous serpents with linear bodies and heads defined by long jaws and dot eyes, imagery typical of Chavín metalwork and relief carving. The design is built from thick, flowing relief bands that interlock across the rounded surface, creating the dense and highly stylized imagery characteristic of Chavín art. Unusual and highly compelling, the bowl turns the vessel's outer surface into a concentrated field of supernatural imagery.

Chavín art is distinguished by a highly stylized visual language in which supernatural figures, serpent imagery, and emphatic contour are combined into compact, carefully ordered designs. This concentrated and often highly graphic mode of representation is a hallmark of Chavín stone, metal, and ceramic art. In very good condition; with mineral deposits and minor surface wear.

Diameter: 5 ½ inches

Estimate: $1,500 - $2,500.
