Description
A Chavín Miniature Jaguar VesselPeru, Initial Period-Early Horizon, c. 900 - 200 BC
Steatite or some other beige-russet translucent stone. This exquisitely carved miniature vessel depicts a muscular jaguar standing foursquare, its rounded paws carefully incised with individual claws, its spots indicated by a circle and dot motif. Rising from the animal's back is a cylindrical container, its surface decorated with the bold geometric patterns characteristic of Chavín design. The head projects forward, snarling, showing fangs, emphasizing the power and vitality of the feline, a central symbol in Chavín religion and art. In excellent condition.
Although only a few inches high, the vessel demonstrates remarkable technical skill and aesthetic refinement. The choice of lustrous, translucent stone, the precision of the incised details, and the successful integration of animal form with functional container mark this as a masterpiece of miniature Chavín sculpture. Small vessels of this type likely served as luxury ritual objects, combining symbolism, utility, and artistry in a single form.
