Description

Three Chimu Silver Beakers, kero
Peru, c. 1000-1400 AD

Each with repousse over most of their surface. One with rectangles framing vertical rows of alternating diving birds and swimming fish, a band of waves top and bottom. Another divided into two sections, each with two rectangular panels of long-necked birds and fish, a band of waves top, middle and bottom. The larger third with two wide bands, each with a frontal standing figure wearing large crescent-shaped crown, grasping a serpent with attached animals and birds. Around this figure are peculiar zoomorphic figures with spotted curved bodies, three sets of tail feathers, a human head wearing a cap, and each holds a bird either upright or upside down. These surreal figures are linked by a scrolling line emanating from the tops of their caps. Narrow bands with a stepped fret design at top, middle, and bottom. Each in very good condition, most likely partly crushed at one time so they have creases and some tiny holes and tears. The larger has some unprofessional restoration around a quarter of its rim.
