    Copper with depletion gilding
    (A) Length 44 1/2 in. Diameter (at bell) 2 1/4 in
    (B) Length 44 3/16 in. Diameter (at bell) 2 1/8 in.
    (C) Length 43 5/16 in. Diameter (at bell) 3 1/16 in.
    (D) Length 43 5/16 in. Diameter (at bell) 3 3/16 in.

Metal trumpets of this extended straight form are almost non-existent in the literature. One set, also of four essentially identical gilded examples, is in the private Peruvian collection of Enrico Poli Bianchi (Duccio Bonavia. Arte e Historia del Peru Antiguo. Colección Enrico Poli Bianchi. Arequipa, Peru: Banco del Sur, 1994. p.177, pl. 140; no cultural or chronological attribution is given, but they are localized at Pacatnamú). The fact that the present set is also of four closely matched trumpets raises the interesting question whether this was the usual number, and that there was some cosmological significance connected with their ceremonial use. Although these four trumpets are similar in overall size, configuration, and structural method, each trumpet has individual qualities. Bell diameters vary slightly, and there are differences in the use of tabs near the bell to stabilize the overlapped jointure of the sheet copper. More remaining depletion gilding survives on the cupped mouthpieces than elsewhere. The general condition is good, with light surface corrosion and a few small cracks.
