An Extraordinary Lambayeque Silver Libation Bowl
Peru, c. 800-1000 AD

A silver alloy double-walled bowl with a pouring lip inside. The exterior wall has repousse work in a repeated motif of the mythological king/deity Nayalam, an ancient Andean solar god, depicted holding staffs surmounted by birds. From his crown, stepped at the ends, sprout two long stemmed flowers from which dangle fish. The rim is decorated with birds. The entire background of the raised figures is finely etched with crisscrossed lines. In very good condition, oxidation of the silver, small encrustations of verdigris at bottom of bowl, some repairs in metal, especially along the bottom of the row of figures.
