A Large and Important Gran Cocle Gold Pendant
Panama, c. 1100-1500 AD

Superb hollow cast tumbaga pendant in form of a male with bird wings and large spatulate feet. Animal and reptile heads with curling snouts emanate from his ankles, wing tips, and sides of his head. A braided belt across his waist. His legs are flexed at the knees as though leaping or dancing. His facial expression, the slit eyes and mouth, suggest a trance-like state appropriate for the shape-shifting shamanic imagery prevalent in the ancient Central American cultures. A loop on back for suspension. In excellent condition.
