Description

A Gold Manta Ray Pendant
Panama, probably Coclé or Greater Chiriquí, c. 800-1200 AD

Finely worked in a rich gold alloy, this remarkable pendant takes the form of a manta ray with broad outspread fins and a long tapering tail. The surface is organized by openwork scrolling bands and pierced curvilinear ornament, giving the pendant unusual lightness, movement, and decorative complexity. Two ribbed cephalic projections rise at the top, while the central body is divided by narrow raised bands that frame the lace-like openwork fields. The lower edges of the fins are further enriched with tightly ordered spiral ornament, and the fin tips are naturalistic raised as though in motion. A suspension loop at the reverse allowed the piece to be worn. The result is both naturalistic and highly stylized, transforming the manta ray into an image of great elegance and rhythmic force. A superb and unusually graceful example of Isthmian goldwork, notable for its breadth, richness of design, and courtly refinement. In excellent condition.

Width: 5 inches

More Information: XRF tested surface reads as a gold–silver–copper alloy at the testing point. Au 75.53%, Ag 10.05%, Cu 13.56%, with minor Fe <0.856% likely attributable to surface contamination or residue.

Estimate: $7,000 - $10,000.
