A Fine Moche Mask
Peru, c. 100 BC - 200 AD

This is a highly sophisticated rendering of a man's head, molded and hammered from copper alloy sheet. The eyes are inlaid white shell with lapis lazuli disk pupils. It has two slits on the forehead, small holes in the earlobes and a pierced septum -- all would have once held metal dangles or rings. Four tabs on the back perimeter for attachment to a larger object. This small mask has a remarkably beautiful blue-green encrusted patina (verdigris). It is in excellent condition for its age, origin, and mediums.

Mr. Sonin (1926-2011) was a renowned Pre-Columbian art expert, especially for metallurgy.
