Large Ixtlan del Rio Seated Woman

    Nayarit, Ixtlan del Rio
    C. 200 BC-100 AD
    Polychrome Pottery
    14" Tall x 9" Wide

The expressive woman sits upright, her legs comfortably tucked beneath her skirt, left hand held to her waist and the right arm raised and extending over a jar that rests on her leg. A vividly painted example, she wears a band across the forehead pulling her black hair behind, crescent ornaments on the ears, a large loop nosering piercing the septum, and wearing a single strand necklace. The deep red ground is colored in details in black, cream, and yellow with wide, strong, swooping facial tattooing, serpent designs on the chest, and the jar and skirt beautifully decorated with stripes, undulating designs, and geometrics. An earlier example, she has only the right arm reglued , missing those fingers from ancient time, and is covered in ancient mineral growths and patina. This lot requires third party shipping.
