Description

An Olmec Standing Figure
Las Bocas Style, c. 1200-900 BC

Tan earthenware burnished to a glossy finish. Traces of red cinnabar in the crevasses of the toes and hands. A fully formed standing figure of ambiguous gender, the body rounded and softly modeled with legs splayed, feet angled downward and straightened. The arms are pulled slightly away from the body with free floating hands cupped inward toward body. The figure has a pensive facial expression under a high brow and rounded head.

This figure belongs to a group of four figures that are very similar in appearance and were probably made by the same artist or artisans working closely together. The only significant difference among them is that three represent women with breasts. Each figure was probably dressed in perishable garments, perhaps as part of a ceremonial tableau. The feet and hands bear traces of cinnabar, which underscores the theory that the bodies were dressed and the heads with headdresses. They are unusually large for Las Bocas figures and the bodies lean backward while the heads tilt forward.
