An Inca Vessel
Peru, c. 1200-1450 AD

An intriguing composition of two chambers in the form of thick yokes with pointed tips (perhaps representing a grub or larvae). Rising from their backs are long columns, one ending with a flared rim, the other closed with a monkey clinging to one side, its tail trailing along the bridge. An openwork bridge handle connects them. Earthenware with burnished cream and red-brown slips. In excellent condition, remains of soil and some spots of surface erosion through the slips here and there, otherwise intact.
