A Superlative Maya Figure...
Description
A Superlative Maya FigureMesoamerica, Peten region, Late Classic, c. 600-900 AD
Hollow, smoothly finished orangeware with a spot of blue pigment on necklace. This striking figure belongs to the rare corpus of modeled ceramics from the Petén region. Unlike the more familiar mold-made figurines from Jaina and other coastal and riverine centers, Petén figures are fewer in number and markedly distinct in style. The face is finely modeled, with expressive features that convey concentration and seriousness, the furrowed brow suggesting intense focus. This controlled expression contrasts with the powerful, muscular body, creating a balance between physical strength and the jewel-like refinement of the facial modeling. The figure wears a heavy belt and long waisted loincloth, with accessories otherwise restrained, heightening the sense of mass and presence.
A small perforation on his forehead suggests that the figure once bore a removable headdress, now lost. He holds an oval object in his proper right hand and a belt or strap hangs over his left forearm, enigmatic elements that may allude to athletic competition or ritual performance. The combination of robust anatomy and refined modeling demonstrates the technical mastery of Maya ceramicists and underscores the rarity of such individualized representations within the broader corpus of Classic Maya figural art.
The legs at the knees, and the long apron at its middle have been reattached with restoration over the break lines. The body spotted dark areas from mineral stains and minor flakes on the thigh of the proper right leg. Otherwise in an excellent state of preservation.
