Description
A Superb Nayarit CoupleIxtlan del Rio, West Mexico, circa 250 BC - 250 AD
These are remarkable not only for their intact preservation but also for being an engaging matched pair with a great sculptural presence, their adornments and garments counterpointing one another. Both crafted from hollow pink-orange earthenware with white and black pigments. Both are seated cross-legged with similar friendly expressions on their faces. The male holds a small bowl in his proper right hand and a mace in his left. He wears tight pants with a pointed flap at front, and a striped shirt. She wears a striped wrap around skirt, fancy tasseled armbands, and balances a bowl on her head. Both have face painting in black, they wear stacked neck and ear rings, a nose ornament and a headband. Both appear to be in excellent, intact condition, no visible repairs or restorations, each have scattered black mineral deposits.
