Description
A Superb and Important Nazca Trophy Head JarPeru, Early Intermediate Period, c. 100-600 AD
Superbly crafted ceramic with very thin walls, painted on the exterior with three wide bands. The top band features four anthropomorphic trophy heads with a forehead ornament and a human body extending to the right. The central band has three depictions of the bizarre "Bloody Mouth" variety of the mythical killer whale, each with human legs extending from their underside. The lower band has the face of a male with moustache, goatee, and earrings. The dark brown over the rest of this band represents his hair with an ornament at the back. An red circle within a black circle is painted on the underside. In Nazca art this represents the foramen magnum, or the hole at the base of the skull where the head has been severed from the body. Thus, this jar represents a trophy head. In excellent condition, the vessel intact and the colors vibrant; minor dings, paint loss, and discolorations.
