A Refined Maya Polychrome Bowl
Guatemala or Southern Mexico, Late Classic Period, c. 500-800 AD

Created by a highly skilled ancient Maya artist, this bowl has an elegant shape, with slightly fluted lower section, a distinct shoulder line, and subtle curve to the rim. Equally refined are the orange and red painted figures of Chaac on each side, the god of rain and fertility. A row of glyphs along the upper section. The fine burnishing of the surface gives this an attractive sheen and hand feel. In very good condition, no apparent repairs or restorations, minor scrapes and scratches and mineral deposits. A line around the middle in the interior probably is the remains of a liquid or food that was once held in the vessel.
