A Reclining Colima Dog ...
Description
A Reclining Colima DogWest Mexico, c. 250 BC - 250 AD
Hollow ceramic with burnished red-brown slip. The dog reclines with its head raised in an alert, attentive expression, the large ears perked and the front paws tucked neatly beneath the forelegs. Particularly unusual is the broad triangular tail, lifted to touch the rear of the body. The animal's weight shifts subtly to its left, giving the form an attractive naturalistic curve and a sense of ease within repose. The sculptor has captured both mass and responsiveness, making the figure feel vividly observed rather than merely formulaic. A handsome example, notable for the elegance of its silhouette and the comfortable animation of its pose. In good condition; assembled from approximately six large original pieces, with restoration over the break lines.
