Description

A Pair of Jalisco Figures
West Mexico, c. 250 BC-250 AD

Each hollow ceramic figure is covered with a burnished cream-colored slip, with black pigment accenting the eyes and mouths. Together they form a particularly appealing pair, closely related in modeling and scale, yet differentiated by pose and character. Both lean slightly forward, creating an immediate sense of presence and engagement. The male rests his crossed arms on raised knees, while the female lifts a bowl in her proper left hand. Her lower back rises in a slight hunch, giving the pair an added note of individuality.

What is especially affecting here is the warmth of the faces. Both figures are modeled with open, friendly expressions that feel unusually direct and human, as though greeting the viewer. The shared forward inclination of their bodies reinforces that sense of welcome and exchange. The pair is carefully balanced: similar enough to read as companions, distinct enough to sustain visual interest. The result is both intimate and sculpturally assured.

Jalisco figural groups and pairs rank among the most engaging achievements of ancient West Mexican ceramics, and this example is notable for its harmony, charm, and emotional accessibility. Rather than relying on theatrical gesture alone, the sculptor has created a relationship between the two figures through posture, expression, and subtle variation of form. A highly attractive and evocative pair, rich in personality and unusually appealing in mood. Both in very good, intact condition, no apparent repairs or restorations. Each with extensive black manganese deposits.

Heights: 11 and 11 ¼ inches

Estimate: $2,000 - $3,000.
