Description

A Maya Polychrome Plate
Mesoamerica, c. 600–900 AD

Painted in vibrant red-brown, cream, and yellow-gold, this striking plate presents a visually animated composition centered on a wide-bodied fish within the central medallion. Surrounding it are concentric bands of geometric ornament, while the flaring walls are encircled by a broad register of alternating water birds, shells, and other aquatic imagery associated with the Maya Underworld. The overall effect is both lively and sophisticated, uniting bold figural imagery with rhythmic abstract design.

Plates of this kind were valued not only as vessels but also as vehicles for complex symbolic imagery, and the emphasis here on aquatic creatures and watery motifs gives the composition unusual coherence and thematic force. The fish at center serves as a powerful focal image, while the surrounding bands create a sense of movement and visual abundance characteristic of accomplished Maya polychrome painting. In very good condition overall, with a traditional kill hole at the center and some mineral deposits adhering to the flaring sides. Repaired from two large pieces with restoration over the breaks.

Diameter: 12 ¼ inches

Estimate: $2,500 - $3,500.
