Description
A Maya Polychrome Cylinder VaseMesoamerica, Late Classic, c. 600-800 AD
A palace scene with a ruler dressed in layers of belts, aprons, and tassels, wearing an elaborate headdress with white plumage front and back. He appears to be dancing, his proper left leg flexed and his left arm held out with an oversized hand bent at wrist. His face has an intense expression, his mouth open as though speaking or singing. Two attendants stand behind him, each with an open mouth as though singing. They also wear layered clothing, but their headdress is simpler with just one white plume at front. The second figure wears a jaguar pelt and head. On the ground between them are bundles and a short, mushroom-shaped pillar. In good, intact condition, no apparent repairs or restorations; however there is staining from exposure to liquid especially on the bottom and up about 2 inches into the painting. There is also dark staining from an unknown cause on the sides of the vase throughout.
Height: 8 ½ inches
More Information: The manganese deposit fizz with application of hydrogen peroxide. The paints are baked on, they do not come off with application of acetone. Blacklight does not reveal any repairs or restorations.
