A Maya Peccary Effigy Vessel
Mesoamerica, Early Classic Period, circa 300-600 AD

Light orange earthenware in the form of a recumbent peccary whose body is the large bowl, his legs and tail tucked in and encircling it. The vigorously modeled head with flat snout and perked ears projects above the rim. Perhaps this beautiful vessel functioned as a serving dish for cooked peccary meat, a desired source of protein for the ancient Maya. If so, this vessel is a visual pun, an artfully modeled container indicative of its contents. In very good condition, a repaired loss under the proper left shoulder, very minor chips and scratches, surface erosion to the underside.
