A Maya Lidded Cache Bowl
Mesoamerica, Middle Classic Period, c 300-600 AD

Rising from a circular disc to a lower flange painted with a wave and dot design, the outward sloping sides of the bowl are painted in two bands with the profile head of a ruler or deity looking down. He is wearing an elaborate neck piece and a towering headpiece with an eye, yoke, and curling forms. The lid centering a fully modeled human head as knob, a feathered collar around its neck. The sloping side of the lid painted with three panels of curling and feather motifs. Orange earthenware painted in shades of black, blue-gray and cream. In very good condition, a single repaired crack all along the bottom and a triangular piece glued back in place on one side of the bowl.
