A Maya Cylinder Vase
Mesoamerica, Late Classic, circa 600-900 AD

The large vase painted in dark red on orange, with linear details in black. Two panels separated by diagonal bands, each with an enigmatic scene of a thin human body with an insect-like face seated in a large wing shape. Each leans far forward extending the right arm while the left hand is simply cupped. One panel has a feathered half medallion at the top with a hooked spiral; while the other has two similar feathered medallions each with a foot in it. There are numerous supernatural figures depicted in the reserves. Three bands of repeated design above. In very good condition; minor scratches, nicks; one panel has some paint rubbed off near the figure's legs.
