DescriptionA Late Pre-Classic Maya Effigy Vessel
c. 400-100 BC
Possibly Izapa. Burnished brown earthenware with black firing cloud on front, original to the piece. Depicts a fat creature seated on its back haunches with head tilted back and mouth wide open. The facial features, spinal cord, tail, and back feet modeled in moderate relief. Legs and arms modeled in low relief and delicately etched with wide arm and leg bands, each with rectangular segments trimmed with scalloped edges, and fingers indicated on hands. Lightly etched band descending from bottom of each eye to cheek. In very good condition, possible restoration to proper left cheek area, linear scratch on proper right haunch.
