A Large Nayarit Figure
San Sebastian region, West Mexico, c. 250 BC - 250 AD

She sits erect on two pegs at her back, hands to abdomen. She is nude aside from painted armbands, five strand necklace, stacked earrings, and a very large circular nose ring. She has finely incised striated hair parted down the middle and scarification bumps on her shoulders. Hollow earthenware with a burnished red-brown slip, white pigments on armbands and dots on necklace, trace remains of wax-resist painted spirals and dots on her back and buttocks. In very good condition; visible restoration at the hip joint of her proper right leg, numerous black mineral deposits and smoke trails from firing.
