A Large Maya Polychrome Plate
Guatemala or Mexico, Late Classic Period, c. 600-900 AD

Very large for the type at nearly 15 inches diameter. The tanware plate painted on the interior in dark red, orange, and black, depicts a standing figure gesturing animatedly to his front. He wears elaborate headgear with long tendrils or plumes extending to his front and back, from his waistband fall tubular flaring objects with a long ribbon gracefully flowing from them. The rim painted half with a pseudo-glyph band and half solid. The plate raised on three short hollow legs with pellets inside so they rattle. In very good condition, repaired from approximately four large pieces with restoration over the breaks.
