Description

A Large Chancay Figural Urn
Peru, c. 1000-1400 AD

This large example is especially striking for its scale and strong coloration. The lower body is painted in dark rust-brown, with the rounded base painted with dark brown curving legs and small raised feet. At the center, the hands hold a small cone-shaped cup. A collar of rectangular segments marks the transition to the cream-colored upper torso and head.

The large face is somewhat naturalistic, with black pigment defining the mouth area, eyes, and markings on the cheeks that may suggest tattooing or facial paint. Large circular ear flares project at the sides, and the mouth, nose, and eyes are raised in relief. A black painted headband supports four raised, notched tabs. Large in scale and unusually commanding, this is a fine, intact example of Chancay votive sculpture, combining formal clarity with an arresting graphic presence. In very good, intact condition; no apparent repairs or restorations. With overall pitting to the pigments, and minor scuffs and scrapes.

Height: 18 ¾ inches

Estimate: $1,000 - $1,500.
