Description
A Finely Painted Maya Tripod PlateMesoamerica, Late Classic Period, c. 600-900 AD
Polychrome buff earthenware painted in red, black, beige, and orange on a yellow slip. Centering the tonsured head of the young Maya Maize God in profile. The profile head has the refined features of a young lord with red painted designs around the eye and mouth and forehead. He wears an elaborate ear ornament, beaded necklace with pendant, a nose bead, and feathers. The four repeating and legible glyphs on the rim refer to the name of a royal person or lord. The plate is raised on three round feet.

More Information: In overall very good condition. Two hairline cracks, each approx. 2 1/4" in length, descending from the rim. One shallow chip on the rim. Surface with wear commensurate with age, including dings and abrasions. No apparent restoration.
