Description
A Finely Detailed Teotihuacan VesselValley of Mexico, Early Classic Period, 300-600 A.D.
Orangeware ceramic with red-painted exterior, trace remains of stucco on the surface. Finely potted in rich orange clay, this tripod vase is crisply incised and carved in low relief with a scene of two facing dignitaries, each adorned in elaborate feathered costume and quetzal feather headdress. In front of their mouths issue speech scrolls, while from their open hands streams a broad band representing flowing water or rain-a powerful evocation of fertility central to Teotihuacan ideology. Between them rise architectural structures, altars, or other emblems, knotted and scroll-like, characteristic symbolism of the Teotihuacan empire. The carving is exceptionally precise, with incised details that stand out against the smooth walls, while remains of red pigment (probably cinnabar) glow warmly against the orangeware surface. The combination of exquisite incising, sensitive carving, and luminous color embodies the technical refinement and religious symbolism of the best Teotihuacan ceramic art. In very good condition, a single 1 inch vertical crack repaired and restored, the three feet reattached.
