Description

A Elegant Nazca Polychrome Cup
Peru, Early Intermediate Period, circa 100-600 AD

The sides of this delicate ceramic cup are of a fine, even thinness. At the bottom is a row of 6 faces, possibly of young girls. Above them are two bands with a repeated motif scholars have identified as the frontal image of the vencejos bird, a type of swift that hovers near the water of the coast of Peru and thus represents fertility and water. On Nazca ceramics it is highly stylized with its beak pointing downward and its legs and tail to the sky above. The treatment of the birds on this vessel is unique in having a red-brown band painted horizontally across the forehead on which two eyes are represented. The birds are drawn between the fins of the mythical Killer Whale, a motif common in the art of the Nazca. In very good condition, a hairline crack on one side, a small gouge and scratch curves down from the rim to near the bottom on the other side.
