Description

A Dramatic Salinar Bat Effigy Vessel
Peru, Early Horizon - Early Intermediate Period, circa 200 BC - 100 AD

A double-chambered vessel, with a gourd shape connected to the bat vessel by a bridge handle and a tapering spout. It also whistles when liquid contents are poured form the spout. The bat is skillfully modeled with outstretched wings and full set of bat teeth - similar to common brown bat of Peru. Because of its ability to swiftly and surely navigate in darkness, the bat was revered by the ancient peoples of the Andes as a supernatural creature. Earthenware with burnished cream slip and delicately painted details in reddish-brown. The artist captured the spread of the wings to full theatrical effect. This vessel is a terrific example of the immediacy and spontaneity of the very best Salinar pottery.
