A Colima Dog
West Mexico, c. 250 BC-250 AD

Hollow ceramic with a burnished black slip. The dog stands alert on muscular legs, with pronounced scapulas at the front shoulders and strongly marked hip bones. The anatomy of the legs is unusually observed, with a skeletal clarity that gives the figure exceptional structure and life. Almond-shaped eyes are engraved, the mouth is open to show teeth, and the pointed tail is raised. The spine rises gently along the back, reinforcing the animal's attentive stance. A striking and naturalistic rendering, notable for its close observation and unusual anatomical definition. In overall good, intact condition; no apparent repairs or restorations. The surface is spotted and streaked with light brown stains and lifted root marks.
