Description
A Colima DogWest Mexico, c. 250 BC-250 AD
Hollow ceramic with burnished red-brown slip. The dog stands securely on its legs, the head facing forward with the mouth open to show teeth and the eyes and ears set in an alert expression. The body is full and rounded, giving the figure a strong, grounded presence. Colima dogs were not only mortuary effigies, believed to guide the spirit in the afterlife, but also animals known as companions and a source of food in ancient West Mexico. For that reason, these figures often carry a distinct individuality, shaped by close personal observation. A fine example, notable for its warmth, character, and directness. In very good condition; left ear restored, minor scratches and small scrapes on the back and sides.
Length: 15 inches
Estimate: $1,200 - $1,800.
