A Calima Zoomorphic Vessel...
Description
A Calima Zoomorphic VesselColombia, c. 200 BC-200 AD
Hollow ceramic with burnished red-brown slip over the legs and most of the body, while the head and shoulders are finished in cream and embellished with subtle black resist decoration in geometric bands of dots and stripes. The vessel is formed with a rounded body raised on four bulbous legs, a curled tail at the rear, and twin spouts joined by a bridge handle. The contrast between the warm red-brown body and the more delicately ornamented pale head gives the piece a lively visual balance. A handsome and well-preserved example of Calima ceramic design, combining animal form with refined surface patterning. In very good, intact condition; no apparent repairs or restorations. A lump of hard material appears between the proper left legs.
