A Large White Jade Zoomorphic Mace Head
    Costa Rica, c. 100-700 AD

The mace head carved as a fantastic human-animal transformation figure, with deeply drilled, skull-like eyes, upturned snout with a herringbone pattern, bi-conically drilled nostrils and a crest projecting from the front of skull. In excellent condition, minor chip under proper right eye and on upper lip, small hole on top of head original to the piece, front of proper right ear with a small chip.

Mace heads are thought to be weapons that were attached to wooden staffs as emblems of status, rank or clan affiliation. The creatures represented on these objects were probably tied to mythic oral histories underpinning the ancestries of lineages and clans. Today, the ethnic Amerindian Talamanca of Costa Rica regard certain animals and composite spirits as the protectors of their clans.
