A Large Ixtlan del Rio Couple
    Nayarit, West Mexico, c. 250 BC - 250 AD

A large "power couple", with all the vibrant, expressionistic characteristics of the Ixtlan del Rio type. Each of similar construction, hollow earthenware painted with white, red, and black pigments. The male raises a spade-shaped object in his right hand, the female holds a bowl onto her right shoulder and a suckling infant is at her left breast. Each has an amazing projecting nose, the male's nose has a three-part ornament through the septum, while the female wears a wide nose ring. The female has stacked earrings, a headband, and she wears a wrap-around skirt. The male wears a conical hat and a tunic that reaches to his waist leaving his genitals exposed. Condition: the male is missing his lower ears that originally would have stacked earrings; the female with possible restoration to front of skirt, hairline cracks on abdomen, crack on proper right wrist. Each is somewhat soiled and has large areas of black manganese deposits. Overall, they are in very good condition, appropriate for their age, origin and fragility - being low-fired earthenware.

    Heights: 15 ¼ and 17 ¾ inches
