Ramos, Mel:Perhaps best known for his work painting female nude figures and comic book characters, Mel Ramos has carved out a niche for himself in the American art scene. With a great focus on mass appeal and popular culture, Ramos' work has been featured all over the world and has been met with great acclaim. Born in Sacramento, California on July 24, 1935, Ramos remained in California to pursue his education. After attending junior college, Ramos graduated from Sacramento State College with both Bachelors and Masters degrees in art. It was during his time at Sacramento State that he was able to study under Wayne Thiebaud, who would become a lifelong mentor and friend. Ramos exhibited one of his first shows at the Bianchini Gallery in New York City. He quickly became known within the pop art scene. Ramos was part of a successful collaboration with Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein that included his paintings of comic book characters. Their work was featured at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art exhibit in 1963. With a focus on pop art and mass merchandising, Ramos used the female form intertwined with consumer products as a way to comment on the commercialization of beauty and women as a whole. While Ramos rose to fame thanks to his work throughout the 1960's, his body of work has remained relevant and in demand for decades to follow. Ramos was awarded the National Endowment for the Arts Visual Artists Fellowship Grant in 1986, further securing his place among the great modern painters of our time. With a short, somewhat unsuccessful deviation into landscape painting, Ramos has stayed true to his work depicting female nudes and items appealing to the consumer culture. He has maintained relationships with several galleries, being represented by the Modernism Gallery in San Francisco, the Galerie Ernst Hilger in Austria and the Meisel Gallery in New York City. Along with extensive exhibitions and reproductions of his work in print, Mr. Ramos spent many years in teaching positions at several colleges and universities throughout the United States. Now retired from teaching, Ramos holds the title of Professor Emeritus at California State University, East Bay.
