    SUSAN SHATTER (American, 1943-2011)
    Untitled, 1972
    Watercolor and gouache on paper
    17-1/2 x 44-1/4 inches (44.5 x 112.4 cm)

    PROVENANCE:
Fischbach Gallery, New York, October 1973

    NOTE:
This silvery panorama of a dockyard at dawn, before the feverish bustle of work begins, is an exemplary early work by watercolorist, Susan Shatter, who passed away this past summer. Her New York Times obituary (July 10, 2011) noted: "Susan was a beloved member of the [National] Academy and one of the foremost watercolor painters in America who brought a contemporary sensibility to rendering the landscape before her." Based in New York, Shatter taught courses at the National Academy since 1997, and served as its president from 2005-2009.

In more recent years, Shatter's work evolved from this Photorealist manner Ted Pillsbury admired during the 1970s, to a much looser, transparent way of handling her favored medium. In effect, over the course of her life, the artist explored the range of expressive possibilities watercolor and gouache could offer. In a 2008 article for Yankee magazine, Edgar Allen Beem wrote: "Susan Shatter ranks among the best contemporary American watercolor painters. Other than Andrew Wyeth, I can't think of another living artist who has done a more substantial body of work in watercolor." Beem perceptively noted that her treatment of water subjects "brings the fresh, translucent quality of watercolor to bear on the very element from which the medium springs."
