Vera Lutter
    RHEINBRAUN: September 2, 2006, 2006
    Unique gelatin silver print
    24 x 20 inches (61.0 x 50.8 cm)

Vera Lutter was the inaugural FOCUS exhibition artist in the fall of 2005. Lutter was born in Germany and currently lives in New York. She is known for her x-ray-like photographs of buildings and structures in urban environments.

For the Director's Council benefit auction, Lutter presents the photograph RHEINBRAUN: September 2, 2006, 2006. Rheinbraun, now the energy company RWE, is a coal mine located in Hambach, Germany, where Lutter captured industrial structures and mining equipment delving into the earth, seeking the coal buried 1,000 feet below the surface. Lutter says that her "RHEINBRAUN images explore both the capabilities of an industrialized civilization and the place where such efforts culminate in devastation." The coal mine is a perfect example of this as the land is excavated to get to the ever-depleting supply of coal, completely destroying the area around it in the process. Our ability to obtain energy this way is an important modern feat, but it is at the cost of the desolation of the environment as we seek more and more. Lutter works with a large camera obscura, a choice that produces resulting photographs meant to "reflect the immensity and madness of this undertaking, giving evidence to the monumentality of the mining project and its infrastructure while also reflecting on the sublime and haunting beauty found within this system of destruction and recreation."
