Through the use of Ben-Day dots and graphic styles used by cartoons and newspapers, Roy Lichtenstein co-opted the forms and methodology of low culture, and elevated them to the realm of high art. With I Love Liberty, the revered Pop master breaks down the statue's elemental features into simple lines and blocks of color set against a simple, diagonally-striped background. Lichtenstein flattens out the three-dimensional form of Lady Liberty and crops the image to show only a portion of her face, arm, and aloft torch, creating a compositional tension within the work while simultaneously relaying just enough visual information to communicate the whole idea of the statue itself.
