Study for Translators, 2013
Mixed Media on Paper
11 x 15 inches (27.9 x 38.1 cm)
Nigel Cooke's FOCUS exhibition was in the fall of 2006. The British painter combines realism with abstraction in canvases that represent scenes of urban decay mixed with art historical references. In Cooke's atmospheric works, foregrounds populated by detailed depictions of debris are juxtaposed with airy, nearly abstract backgrounds that evoke crumbling concrete walls tinged with graffiti.
For the Director's Council auction, Cooke presents the work on paper Study for Translators, 2013. The image depicts a stack of giant books with humorous titles-Crap, for example-amidst growing weeds and a diminutive female figure in a bikini. The roughly painted background is a muddy gray and further suggests a dystopian scene. The work was in the exhibition Paper at SMAC Art Gallery in Cape Town in early 2014.
