Bronze with polychrome patina
61-1/2 x 40-1/2 x 36-1/4 inches (156.2 x 102.9 x 92.1 cm)
Nancy Graves is well represented in the Modern's collection, including the pastel and glitter work on paper Untitled 10-15-86, 1986, which was a gift to the Modern by the Director's Council in 1987. Graves was an American sculptor, printmaker, and painter, and she was the first woman to have a solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York.
For the Director's Council auction, two sculptures by Graves are available-Spiralate III, 1987, and Pacifica, 1983. Both are bronze with polychrome patina. These sculptures, like her other work, are colorful, whimsical, and poetic. Spiralate III has bursts of color and vertical, twisting spiral-shaped forms that top a wheeled cart-like form. Pacifica is an abstracted landscape of flora and leaves, each hued with bright colors.
