Description

    JACK GOLDSTEIN (American, 1945-2003)
    Untitled, 1990
Acrylic on canvas (in four parts)
    96 x 36 x 6 inches (243.8 x 91.4 x 15.2 cm)

    PROVENANCE:
John Weber Gallery, New York (label verso)
    Rebecca Donelson, Chicago
Private collection, Los Angeles (acquired from the above in 2003)

    EXHIBITED:
Newport Beach, Orange County Museum of Art, Jack Goldstein X 10,000, June 24-September 9, 2012
New York, The Jewish Museum, Jack Goldstein X 10,000, May 10-September 29, 2013

    LITERATURE:
Philipp Kaiser, Jack Goldstein X 10,000, Prestel, 2012, illustrated in color p. 202

    NOTE:
"When one attempts to isolate Goldstein's last painted picture, the matter become more complicated, as his work of the 1990s seems to dissolve into graphics and writing. Untitled (1990, plate 59) is one of the last significant paintings, its vertical composition nearly identical to the box Goldstein designed for Totems: Selected Writings with its linear arrangement of elements. It becomes clear that for Goldstein, no medium was so specific that it couldn't be replaced with another", Philipp Kaiser, page 137

    Condition Report*:

There appear to be a few scattered spots of an uneven varnish layer throughout; minor black surface scratches along extreme edge of turqoise canvas; edges are slightly abraded with minor paint loss to corners; otherwise, artwork is in good condition.
