During a visit to China in 1991, Hung Liu discovered an archive of turn-of-the-century photographs of young Chinese prostitutes taken by Chinese photographers in Western, studio-style settings. These photographs, which had been rescued from the book-burnings of the Cultural Revolution and secretly stored in Beijing. Liu used one of these archival photographs picturing six young Chinese prostitutes seated in a row in a shallow studio setting for her photolithograph entitled Trademark. To comment on the Chinese-appropriated, Western-style aesthetic of this photograph, Liu placed small reproductions of a European-style painted image of an exotic Chinese woman at the knees of each of the prostitutes in the photograph. A visual connection is thus established between the Western-conceived image of the Asian woman as object of exotic desire and the Chinese photographer's representation of the Chinese prostitutes. As an Asian-American woman assimilating to Western society after living in the oppressive atmosphere of the Cultural Revolution in Communist China, Liu has personally confronted similar cross-cultural issues of dominance. Her appropriation of the photograph for Trademark provides a new context for interpreting the identities and circumstances of the anonymous women who are pictured, and suggests the predicament of her situation in establishing her identity as an Asian-American woman.

    Estimate: $700 - $900.
