Also known in the West as Wenda Gu, Gu Wenda studied ink painting under modern master Lu Yanshao at the Chinese Academy of Art in Hangzhou. In the early 1980s, he began taking traditional ink-brush technique in new directions with large, near-abstract paintings and installations. Gu is best known for monumental pieces based on pseudo-Chinese ideograms that, although depicted as if they were ancient traditional characters, are actually meaningless. Moving to New York in the late 1980s, he began United Nations, a series of installations involving banners, curtains, and large-scale forms made from human hair, often featuring unreadable text in made-up 'languages'. To date, he has created more than 25 site-specific installations in the series. Gu's work has been exhibited in museums in Mexico, Australia, Korea, England, Israel, the United States, and other countries. Based in New York City, he also maintains a studio in Shanghai.

While I regret my inability to personally view the work, you provided an excellent substitute for my not being able to do so, and I look forward to future Heritage auctions.
