Throughout his career as an artist, George Grosz always had a strong liking for erotic subjects.
This started as early in 1912 with his move from Dresden to the metropolis Berlin and culminated in large drawings and watercolors in the late Twenties and in a series of large works on paper in America.
As almost always his wife Eva posed for him in the studio, but also in nature, mostly Cape Cod, the fashionable summer resort Grosz started to attend in 1939, spending there two or three month every year, where many of the works were executed, like "Sitting Nude with Summer Hat" of 1940 and "Lovers" and "Sitting Female Nude" from the same year.
It was only after Grosz had moved to the United States in 1933, that he started working not only with watercolor on paper but also with mixed media and oil, often also using white chalk to outline objects and figures. He only used this painting technique for the many female nudes and highly erotic subjects he started to paint in 1937 and above all in the years 1940 and 1941. This important selection of works, offered in the auction May 22 in New York, belongs to this group that within the oeuvre of the artist builds a special work complex of its own kind and importance.
The artist depicts in most of these works the very moment of sexual encounter. Like a sculptor, Grosz models the female body in all details, emphasizing in this way the voluptuous beauty of the nude woman. The anticipated landscape with the sea in near distance or the vague interior of the studio ate in high contrast to the in all details carefully executed figures of the female who in this way dominates the picture with her beauty.
This work is unmounted and unframed; there is a 1" tear to the center bottom edge, and one 1" tear to the center left edge; overall slight toning; some minor handling creases along the edges; otherwise, no other major apparent condition issues.
